For the uninitiated, Google ranks all pages on the web
with a scale of PR0 to PR10 — higher is better. High
PR sites or pages receive most of the traffic for
competitive keywords or phrases. Keywords are what
surfers type into search engines to find what they’re
looking for on the web.

Ranking high in Google for popular keywords can prove
very lucrative. It can make the difference whether
your website is in the black and producing hourly
profits, or a total worthless waste of pixel space.
Having a high Google PR is equivalent to having money
in the bank. It is that important.

For Google is still the undisputed king of traffic, regardless
of what’s on the horizon, Google is the major deliver of
the web’s traffic. That’s why losing your high Google PR
ranking, sometimes overnight, can be so devastating for the
struggling webmaster or marketer.

Read this article to discover how you as a webmaster can
protect yourself from lost profits and traffic, even if
Google pulls the plug on your site or PR, while putting
another one of their endless algorithms into place.

10 Ways to Outsmart Google’s PageRank System

Here’s a list of things you can do to lessen the impact
of a sudden drop of the almighty Google PageRank:

* Diversify your traffic, make sure you cultivate other
sources of traffic other than the search engines. Form
partnerships and strategic links with other webmasters.
Interact in forums and online communities.

* Provide quality information and free products or services
that get ‘good word of mouth’ recommendations from your
visitors. Content will always be king — make sure it reigns
supreme on your site.

* Pick the right domain name. If you can, choose a short
catchy keyword for your domain, one people will remember
and would naturally type into a search engine or browser
to find what they’re looking for on the web. For example:
www.hotels.com.

* If you’re having success with your site,(or/and especially
if you’re not) venture into off-line advertising and promotion.
Use traditional promotional products, t-shirts, caps, bumper
stickers, etc. to promote your URL. You can also try PPC
(Pay Per Click) advertising to provide you with targeted
traffic and sidestep the search engines. Well sort of!

* Try viral products like ebooks, reports and free software
programs to get your links out into the marketplace. You can
also try product or site testimonials which are another great
source of targeted traffic.

* Be extremely careful of any out-going links from your
site. Don’t link to bad neighborhoods (link farms, banned
sites, etc.) Google will penalize you for bad links so
always check the PageRank of the sites you’re linking to
from your site. If you don’t have the Google Bar, you can
check any site’s PageRank here: www.iwebtool.com.

* Onsite SEO factors does have an influence on rankings —
make sure your site is dressed to kill. Pay attention to
keyword density, title descriptions, meta tags, alt tags and
interior linking structure. If you can, optimize your site for
all three major search engines: MSN, Yahoo and Google. But
don’t stop there, also submit your site to the countless other
smaller search engines on the web. It’s the old adage, don’t
put all your eggs into the ever-changing Google basket or
you’re probably turn your site and yourself into one desperate
basket case. Other search engines listed here: http://www.isedn.org.

* Along those same lines, have a large spread of keyword
phrases that you’re targeting with the content on your site.
Don’t go after extremely competitive keywords which have
countless major players with deep pockets buying links,
left right and center. Instead, pick a whole range of keyword
phrases that have less or little competition. All these keyword
phrases will add up to a flood of traffic for your site. Phrases
that for the most part won’t be affected by a sudden drop
in PageRank. One good site for finding these keywords is
www.nichebot.com, it will give both the number of hits and
the amount of competition for each keyword.

* There is one more strategy you must explore if you want
to lessen the power and importance of your own site’s PR.
One strategy that will bring in tons of Google traffic even
if your PR is ZERO. You must utilize the PageRank of other
sites on the web. Use off-page optimization for your major
keywords. Build countless anchor text links through keyword
rich articles, content related blogs and products that benefit
from the high PR of other sites on the web.

* Keyword rich articles are some of the best examples of this
method, placing them on high PR sites will filter Google
traffic through these articles onto your site. It will also
warm up these visitors before they reach your site and they
will be more receptive to any of your site’s offering; never
underestimate the power of the Pre-sell. Build enough of these
links and a sudden drop in your own Google PR ranking won’t
drastically affect your bottom line or the amount of quality
traffic you are receiving.

What’s even more satisfying, if you build these links,
partnerships, and off-site optimization — your Google
PageRank will probably go up. If it doesn’t, who cares,
for you will have Google-Proofed your site against any
sudden drop in your site’s PR rankings and broadened the
reach of your site by using the high PR of other sites on the
Web. In the process, you will have protected your site and
yourself from the big bad Google PR wolf.

You don’t have to conquer Google, you just have to outsmart it!

This article is a follow-up to an article I wrote about On-Page Optimization . On-Page optimization enables each of your web pages to make the most out of the mojo that they have — but you need inbound links to create that mojo in the first place.

I use the term “mojo” as a generic descriptor for the importance given to a web page or a web site based upon inbound links. Similar terms include page rank, site rank, trust rank, and authority. Those terms tend to carry too much linguistic baggage, so I use the term “mojo” for simplicity unless another term is specifically required.

Mojo is created by getting inbound links to your web site and to your web pages.

Getting inbound links is one of the most important, and time consuming, tasks involved in SEO.

Here are a few tips to generate inbound links. Each of these tips are appropriate for some web sites, but none are appropriate for all web sites. Select the link building strategies which are most appropriate for your specific web site.

Submit to Web Directories

Start with big slow directories like the Yahoo Directory and the DMOZ Open Directory Project, but don’t stop there.

Search out the small directories which are dedicated to topics relevant to your web site.

For more suggestions on finding directories to submit to, read How can I find web directories?

Reciprocal Linking

Write individual e-mails to specific webmasters whose web pages compliment your own and tell them that you would like to trade links with them.

Make sure to personalize each e-mail, or your e-mails will be quickly deleted as spam.

To achieve the best results from your e-mail, include the following in your initial e-mail:

* Mention two positive items about their web site, so that they know that your e-mail is not a generic spam.

* Include directions to the specific web page where you have added the link to their web site.

* Mention the Page Rank of the page where you have added a link to their web site.

These web sites exist to help you search for reciprocal link partners in the same market niche’ as your web site:

* Find Link Partners

* Link Partner Finder

* Themes Reciprocal Link Finder

Write Articles for Other Web Sites

One method for getting inbound links is to write quality articles and submit them to other web sites for publication.

Each article should include a link back to your web site.

These links are better than links from link pages, because there tend to be very few outbound links on the article page.

Write a brief article on some topic related to the topic of your web site. Do not write an article about your web site, but write an article that would be interesting to people who would also be interested in your web site.

Send this article to webmasters who maintain web sites on topics similar to the topic of your article. Explain to them that they can post your article for free on their web sites, in return for a link to your web site.

To find web sites to submit articles for publication, visit Where can I submit an article for publication?

Create and Submit Press Releases

Write press releases about your web site and submit them to press release distribution services.

To find places to submit press releases for publication, visit Where can I submit my press release?

Join a Reciprocal Link Program

Reciprocal linking programs exist to help webmasters share links with similar web sites.

Some of the reciprocal link programs are:

* Link Market

* Info Wizards

* LinkExchanged

* Link Partners

* Links-Pal

* Linkateer

* Webmaster Link Exchange

* GoTop Link Exchange ($19.95 fee to join)

* LinkLeads

* Link Traders

* LinkExchangeIt

* SiteSell

* 123ExchangeLinks

* Ads4Links

* Spocka

* Links For You

If you have a blog, try blogLinker, the automatic link swapper for blogs.

These link networks can generate a lot of e-mail. You will probably want to create a new e-mail account just for these networks.

Join the DigitalPoint Ad Network

The DigitalPoint Coop Advertising Network enables you to automatically trade links with thousands of web sites across the Internet.

Join a Reciprocal Linking Forum

Several web forums exist for the purpose of sharing and trading reciprocal links. These linking forums include:

LinkRequests
Link Trade Forum

Start a Reciprocal Linking Program on Your Web Site

You can also setup a reciprocal linking program on your own web site.

For more information on setting up a reciprocal linking program on your site, read How can I add a reciprocal link manager to my web site?

Start or Join a Web Ring

You can use an existing web ring service such as WebRing, or you can create your own web ring using the PHP-Ring webring script.

Join or Create a Top Site List

Search for top site lists which are relevant to your web site.

Add yourself to the existing lists. If no relevant top site lists exist, create one.

Provide a Useful Service

Create dynamic content on your web site which other web masters can include on their web sites by linking to it.

Every webmaster who uses your content automatically adds a link to your site.

Firearm News is an excellent example of this. If you add a small bit of JavaScript to your web page, your users will receive up-to-date news on firearms.

Of course, you will also have to contact other webmasters to let them know about your service — perhaps even with a press release.

Buy Links

If all else fails, you can always buy links to your web site.

Every webmaster should have some basic understanding of
these simple SEO techniques if they want to achieve
Top Rankings for their site. The more you know about these
Search Engine Optimization techniques; the better your
web pages will fare in the different search engines,
especially Google.

Optimizing your pages for the search engines should be
your main priority because conquering and dominating your
chosen keywords is often cited as one of the major
determining factors in the success of your online site
or business. You must have a rudimentary grasp of how
SEO can work for you and your site.

These simple SEO Tips will help you understand
the basics and help you reach your online goals.

1. Title Tag

The Title Tag is located at the top of your html page
and it tells the search engines what your page is about.
When you open your page in a browser these are the
words at the very top of the screen. Despite its simplicity,
the title tag is crucial to ‘on-page optimization’; it should
include your main keywords and it should be 63 characters
or less if you want your title to appear in full on Google.

Many SEO experts create web pages in a three-prong
approach. They place the title in:

- the title tag

- on the webpage itself

- and in the URL for that page.

Sometimes they will just pick the main keywords from
the title and place them in the anchor url instead.
For example: www.yourwebsite.com/keywords.html

3. Meta Description Tag

The Meta Tag contains the description for your web page.
Your description will show up in all the search engines
so you have to be careful to write precisely and objectively.
It should be about 140 characters or around 20 words.
Make sure to include your keywords but don’t spam; don’t
repeat your keywords more than twice, using variations is
helpful.

Keep in mind, successful webmasters make their descriptions
stand out from the crowd and entice the surfer to click
their link. It is also the first contact with your potential
visitor or prospect so make a good first impression.

3. Anchor Tag or URL

The anchor tag is used to form links within websites
or from site to site. This tag should have your title
or the main keywords from your page title to be the most
effective.

Anchor text is also important to know, these are the
underlined, clickable text or words in a link.
<*A HREF="url"> anchor text <*/A>

If you want to check Google for all web pages
containing your keywords in the anchor tags.

Just type into Google Search:
allinanchor:yourkeywords

4. Finding Backlinks

One of the keys to higher rankings is building quality
links from relevant related quality sites. The search
engines, especially Google, counts each link as a “vote”
for your site or content. Many experts suggest you include
your main keywords in the anchor text of these inbound
links in order to rank high.

If you want to find the number of backlinks your site
has.

Just type into Google Search:
link:yourURL

and it will give you the number of backlinks you have.

Google doesn’t give you all your existing backlinks,
so you can try Yahoo! to find a more exact number.

Just open Yahoo! and type in:
linkdomain:yourURL

5. Checking Indexed Pages

If is very important for you to know what content
the search engines have indexed from your site.
You can also check to see how your links are
displayed and to see if any titles or descriptions
are missing from your pages.

You can see how many of your pages are indexed
in Google by using the site command.

Just type into Google Search:
site:yourURL

Another way to look at your pages in Google
is to type in “http://yoursite” and “www.yoursite”
with the quotation marks to see the exact number
of listings for each.

6. Checking Google Cache

You can also check to see the Google Cache
of your site by using the cache command.
You will also discover when it was last
retrieved.

Just type into Google Search:
cache:yourURL

7. Finding Associated Keywords

Keywords are the heart of the Internet, you
must dominate the search engines for your
chosen keywords if you are to succeed online.
You must be able to find variations of your
keywords to completely conquer your targeted
niche. To find what other keywords Google has
associated with your main keywords, just use
the tilde ~ command to find associated phrases
in Google.

Just type into Google search:
~keywords

Variations will be highlighted in bold print.

8. Finding Titled Keywords

If you want to find competing sites that have
your keywords in the title just use the allintitle
command.

Just type into Google search:
allintitle:yourkeywords

In summary, if used consistently, these basic SEO
techniques should help improve your rankings and keep you
in the picture with regards to your standings in the search
engines. Your site’s stats or raw traffic logs will also confirm
the rise or fall of your keyword rankings. You must have
complete knowledge of both your site and your keywords
in the search engines, especially Google. Since Google will
deliver most of your quality traffic, you must optimize for
it and be aware of what is happening to your site and keywords
within Google. This is yet another example where knowledge
equals success.

This is a “must-do” list of 13 tips for site owners who want to attract targeted website traffic and higher search engine rankings.

1.) Create a site with valuable content and useful products or services.

2.) Use your primary and secondary keywords in the first 25 words of your site’s content and try to use them throughout your site.

3.) Research the right keywords to reach your target market and then use them in your content.

4.) Use your keywords in the right places on your page - title, meta tags, headers and of course in the body of your pages.

5.) Keep your site design user-friendly so that your visitors can find what they are looking for on your site.

6.) Submit every page on your site to the major search engines and directories, not just your home page. If you don’t have time to do this, hire someone to do it for you. Make sure this is done manually - don’t use automated submission services.

7.) Keep up with the changes in the algorithms used by search engines and fine tune your web pages accordingly to keep your search engine rankings high. Use available online tools to track the performance of your website.

8.) Keep an eye on your competition - see what they are doing with their site design, content, functionality and use of keywords.

9.) Make use of the log files and reports provided by your web hosting company. You can analyze this data to find out where your visitors are coming from and the links and keywords they used to find you.

10.) Give your visitors something to remember you by - newsletters, reports, coupons and the like.

11.) Show off your expertise and become known as an expert in your field by writing articles and submitting them to directories as well as posting them on your own site.

12.) If you are selling products on your website, make payment and shipping easy for your customers.

13.) When in doubt, hire a professional - it’s a lot cheaper than having a site which goes unvisited.

In conclusion, don’t think of your website as a static thing; make it a dynamic, ever changing place. Think if it like you would a physical retail outlet and do the same things you would do in a bricks and mortar establishment to attract and retain customers.

First of all, if your small business has an existing website, congratulations! You are way ahead of your competitors who don’t even have a website yet.

Who designed your website? Is it attractive, professional, informative, uncluttered? Does it employ the latest “tricks” that customers expect to see, like audio/video presentations showcasing your business, maps to your location and a full description of your goods and services?

Advances in the Internet and changes in Search Engine Optimization (called SEO for short) make it imperitive that you upgrade your existing website to rise to the top of the search engine results. When people search Google or Yahoo for your particular kind of business, you want to be right at the top of the results.

In years past, websites that were at the top of the search engines were large, hundreds (or thousands) of pages in size and were designed by expensive website designers.

Not any more, today you can upgrade your small business website to include audio and video, you can import the latest news in your industry right on the webpage and rise to the top of the search engines for a mere fraction of the former cost!

What exactly is Search Engine Optimization and why should you care?

Equate your thinking about the Internet with the Yellow Pages.

What do you do when you want to find a business (for example, a plumber) in the Yellow Pages? You turn to that heading and then the results are alphabetized within that heading, right?

Well, when someone searches for a plumber on the Internet, the results come back (just like the Yellow Pages) but the results are not alphabetized. Instead, the search engines display the results based on their internal criteria. So, your customer may not ever find your small business website on the Internet, unless it is at the top of the search engines.

That’s why it is critical for you to have a website designed from scratch with search engine optimization in mind. You must have a website that rises to the top of the search engines, or what’s the point?

I invite you to view our professional, affordable websites.

We specialize in bringing small businesses to the top of the Internet search engine listings by designing professional business websites that are optimized from the ground up.

We utilize all the latest technology to bring your website to the top of the search engines.

Don’t trust your Internet business needs to someone who doesn’t specialize in business websites.
